Domain names allow organisations to create a strong business presence on the Internet by incorporating their identity into their Web sites and e-mail addresses. If your organisation is planning on an Internet presence, one of the first steps is to register your domain name.
A Domain Name is like a name in the telephone directory. When you find a name in the directory, it lists the telephone number for that name. When you type a Domain Name into your Web browser, it actually points to a number. This number is known as an IP address, e.g. www.telecom.co.ck is "202.65.32.132".
By registering your domain, you reserve the right to use that name on the Internet and can publish your own Internet addresses in advertising, on letterheads, business cards etc., reflecting a modern and professional look.
You cannot just invent Domain Names and place them on the Internet. The process of obtaining a Domain Name is similar to the process used by a business to obtain a company name.
Domain Names registered in the Cook Islands end with a ".ck" (e.g. Telecom's Domain Name is "telecom.co.ck"). Domain Names are also categorized within a "Community of Interest", such as ".co" for companies and other business organisations. The following "Community of Interest" suffixes are available for domain names registered in the Cook Islands:
• |
".co.ck": is used for business organisations. Companies must register their corporate name or trading name, or some form of abbreviation. For example, Telecom Cook Islands Ltd. has registered "telecom.co.ck" as their domain name. |
• |
".org.ck": is used for "not-for-profit" organisations such as the Cook Islands Library and Museum. For example, the Red Cross has registered "redcross.org.ck" as their domain name. |
• |
".edu.ck": is used for educational institutions such as universities, colleges and schools. For example, Tereora College has registered "tereora.edu.ck" as their domain name. |
• |
".gov.ck": is used for government departments, local government bodies and other government agencies. For example, the Ministry of Justice has registered "justice.gov.ck" as their domain name. |
• |
".net.ck": is used for Internet Service Providers and other organisations directly related to the Internet in the Cook Islands. For example, Oyster has registered "oyster.net.ck" as their domain name. |
